Is your child’s Teddy in need of their regular check-up?
On Saturday the 14th of August students studying Medicine at the University of Newcastle in conjunction with John Hunter Children’s Hospital will be operating a hospital for Teddy Bears. Between 10am and 3pm children are encouraged to bring their favourite soft toy along to Civic Park Newcastle to be checked by the Teddy Doctors, receive any necessary medical treatment (tickles, cuddles, bandages, stitches) and receive their very own medical record.

This FREE event promises great entertainment for families with a fully functional tent hospital suitable for children of all ages. This new community initiative is aimed at improving the interaction between doctors and children. Students hope to reduce some of the fear experienced by children when visiting the doctor by providing a relaxed, fun and positive medical experience. All teddy bears are welcome- none too big, too playful, too ticklish. For more information see www.unms.org.au or contact the University of Newcastle Medical society [Lulu Ma on O421772290]

When: Saturday, 14th of August
Health Equity Selective can introduce you to medicine as you’ve never seen it before (and it can also be a good excuse for an overseas holiday).
First years, it’s time to learn what this 3rd year placement really is and to start dreaming up your own experience of a lifetime. Second years, it’s time not only to dream, but to begin investigating and planning. Electives Night is your only chance to hear from your fellow students the secrets, the do’s and the don’ts, the good, the better, and the best of HES.

Be amazed. Be inspired. Be there.

The AMSA National Teaching & Student Awards champion, respectively, excellence in medical education & the contributions that medical students make to their local community and the wider nation. Submissions are due June 12 2010.

The AMSA National Teaching Award champions excellence in medical education. In the current medico-political climate, nothing is more valuable to medical students than quality teaching. The single Award is given to an individual deemed to have made a very significant contribution to medical education in Australia, as determined by students themselves.

The AMSA National Student Award recognises the excellent contributions that medical students make to their local community and the wider nation. This Award is judged on the personal, academic and professional achievements of the nominees. Consideration is also given to leadership qualities.

Any medical student, on approval of the nominee’s Medical Students’ Society, can nominate any educator or medical student for the Awards, which is ultimately judged by the AMSA National Council at Second Council before the National Convention each year.

Submissions are due June 12 2010. All the details are on Blackboard MedSoc in the AMSA Folder under the Documents tab to the left, or check out www.amsa.org.au

Dear Budding Surgeons,

I would like to invite you to the first Cutters Club event of the year, the Tour of the Central Sterilisation Unit (CSU). As future surgeons, it is important that you are familiar with the work of the CSU because the success of your operations will depend on it. Just think about it – without the CSU, you would not receive sterile tools at the start of your operation or perform operations without introducing serious life-threatening infections to your patients! Scary!

The tour will follow the second Cutters Club meeting for the year, to be held on Monday, the 22/3/2010, at 5.30 pm, behind the coffee shop at the Royal Newcastle Centre (RNC) again. Could you please email me at cutters.club as soon as you can to let me know how many are interested in attending the CSU tour. Depending on the level of interest shown, the tour can potentially run about 3 times on the night. The best part is that we have a very enthusiastic tour guide who will wow-you with all the intricacies of the CSU. See you all there!

Cheers,
